FLEET
WEEK - September/October
San Diego is a military town, no doubt about it, with
more than 275,000 residents employed by Uncle Sam's
fighting forces on active duty and in civilian roles.
The city is home to about 60 ships -- that's more than
one-third of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet. No wonder
San Diego loves Fleet Week. A tradition only 8 years
old, it's a chance to see and appreciate the local
military might. The ''week'' in Fleet Week is a misnomer
-- it actually lasts 28 days, with ship and base tours,
air shows, parades, festivals and golf tournaments. Most
events are open to the public. |
